Spitfire
Commission Date: January 2007
This exciting project was commissioned by the Mayor’s office of Hillingdon Council for the London New Years Day Parade in 2007. With little more than a month in which to do the work, I built and painted a half size Spitfire model for installation on a large articulated lorry on the day of the parade. Two other models were constructed, one of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and another of giant interlocking chains, both used as backdrops for a figure dressed as Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The theme was Hillingdon, so the location of RAF Fighter Command at Uxbridge and Brunel University, both of which are located in the borough, determined the choice of subject matter for our float. In the parade, Hillingdon’s entry won the Parade organiser’s award for best entry.
